We are moved to do great things. We join gyms to make ourselves look better. We join clubs to beef up our resume or show off our talents and even showcase our generosity. Most of our decisions are all about us…’What will others think of me? Do I dress fashionably? Will anyone notice how hard I work or how smart I am?’ Our focus is SELF, and it reveals our insecurities.
As Christians, it’s not until we take the focus off SELF that we learn what it means to SERVE. It shouldn’t matter who chairs the committee or who gets the credit for the successful ministry. We shouldn’t get upset when our name does not get attached to our ideas. Anonymous service is the highest service of all. Jesus warned us not to practice our “piety before men”, but selflessly, so that even our left hand does not know what our right hand is doing (Matthew 6:1-3).
“And seekest thou great things for thyself?” (Jeremiah 45:5a)
