If honesty is the best policy, then let’s be honest. We only welcome immigrants with open arms when it is self-serving or expedient. It was self-serving to import the free labor of slaves. It was self-serving in the early 1900’s, to exploit German and Irish immigrants willing to replace free labor with cheap labor. In a country where the federal minimum wage has only been raised from $5.15 per hour to $7.25 per hour over the last 20 plus years, the immigration of workers willing to work for minimum wage would seem to fit the capitalist’s idea of expediency. But apparently, some things are more important to them than their ‘bottom line’. According to the White House, the famous words on our Statue of Liberty should read: “Give me your Norwegians, your Swedes, your pale-faced masses yearning to join the privileged; I lift my ‘invitation-only’ lamp beside the restricted door.”
The Mosaic Law advocates a better way. “For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.” (Deuteronomy 15:11)
