"There is a great shift happening in America. The powers that be are challenging our constitutional right to citizenship…threatening the very fabric of a nation founded on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. What was once a birthright is now being weighed and debated, dissected by policy and politics. And in that dissection, something sacred is being lost: the right to belong.
Policies and politics are threatening to displace a generation of individuals who could be cast out, despite being born within our borders. Deportation threatens to leave a generation of children born in America feeling rejected, unwanted, and unrecognized.
At our nation’s founding, we penned a declaration that defied tyranny and proclaimed freedom…the freedom to belong, unencumbered by outside influence. But the application of that promise was flawed. From the outset, immigrant slaves were denied the right to belong. And now that ancient wound is resurfacing, rebranded under modern tensions with children of undocumented immigrants.
But here’s the deeper truth: The right to belong has never truly been in man’s hands.
