Three Point

"Years ago, a small congregation finally reached the moment they had prayed for. After years of fish fries, building fund envelopes, and sacrificial giving, they had enough money to build their own sanctuary. It wasn’t going to be fancy, but it would be theirs; a place where their children could grow up, where their choir could sing freely, where their community could gather and worship.

They hired a contractor, broke ground, and watched with joy as the foundation was poured. But somewhere along the way, in the rush to stay on schedule and stretch every dollar, the builder made a quiet decision. Instead of taking the time to set the cornerstone with precision, he ‘eyeballed it’ and nudged it into place by sight. “It’s close enough,” he thought. “Nobody will notice.”

At first, everything looked fine. The walls went up. The roof’s rafters were set in place. The congregation often drove by after work just to see the progress. But as the building grew, problems surfaced. Door frames didn’t line up. Windows sat crooked. The roofline leaned just enough to make the townspeople snicker.

When the city inspector finally walked the site, he didn’t start with the roof or the walls. He went straight to the corner, knelt down, and gave a deep sigh. “The issue isn’t your materials,” he said. “It’s your cornerstone. It’s off. And if the cornerstone is off, the whole building is off.”

Church, the same thing happens in our spiritual lives.
