A few years ago, a well known chef was interviewed about why some meals stay with people long after they leave the table. He said, “A memorable meal always has three things: a story, a structure, and a savor. If any one of those is missing, the meal may fill the stomach, but it won’t feed the soul.”

He explained that every great dish begins with a story…where the ingredients came from, who taught him the recipe, what inspired the creation. Then comes the structure…the technique, the discipline, the science behind the flavors. Finally comes the savor…the richness, the warmth, the taste that lingers.

Then he said something striking: “When all three come together, people don’t just eat the meal…they experience it.”

That’s exactly what happens when God’s Word is preached holistically. A sound sermon becomes more than a speech. It becomes an encounter. It becomes a spiritual meal that reaches the whole person.

Just as a master chef crafts a meal that tells a story, stands on solid technique, and satisfies the palate, Jesus shows us on the Emmaus Road what a sound sermon looks like. It tells a story. It’s theologically sound. And it’s satisfyingly savory.
